We will have a Halloween parade on Monday, October 31st at 9:00 AM. We are asking children who wish to participate to come to school wearing their costume over their clothes. We will begin our walk around the playground track at 9:00 and walk around 2-3 times. This will give the children an opportunity to show off their costumes and to look at their friends.
Parents are invited to watch the parade. After the parade, we ask that you help your child change into regular school clothes before we have our special Halloween snack. Please remember that after the parade, we need to get back to our regular school day, so please help your child change and leave as soon as possible. This will help us calm the children down after all of the excitement. If you are unable to attend, we will assist your child in removing their costume. Please remember that your child’s costume may get dirty or be torn, although we will try our best to keep this from happening.
We are looking forward to a fun celebration and hope that you can come to our parade!

It has been a truly wonderful experience getting to know your child over the past few weeks. This is my second year leading yoga in the preschool classrooms and I look forward to it every week. I have been practicing yoga for almost 20 years and teaching for the last 3. I am a registered yoga instructor through the Yoga Alliance and specialize in K-12 yoga. Families today lead such bustling lives we often do not realize that the pace of our schedules can lead to fewer opportunities for children to slow down and just be silly.
By offering yoga, the Capitol school is giving children skills that will last a lifetime. Children’s yoga can look very different than an adult class. People will often see a class in progress and say, ‘this doesn’t look like yoga,’ but, pretending to be a snake or jelly bean tree today will prepare a child to know what to do to remedy a sore shoulder or relieve the stress of exams or the workplace later in life. The benefits of learning yoga at a young age are enormous. Physically, children become stronger and increase their flexibility and motor skills in a non-competitive environment. Additionally, yoga aids in developing focus, concentration, and an increased sense of calmness. Children approach yoga with such joy and naturalness it is easy to use yoga poses as a springboard for exploring other themes making each practice an interdisciplinary adventure!
Each week we will incorporate a Sanskrit word relating to kindness, self-esteem and empathy. Last week’s word was ‘ahimsa’ which translates to ‘do no harm.’ The children learned about being gentle with themselves and others as we explored new poses together!

The Capitol school picnic is NOT tomorrow, but has been postponed to Tuesday, September 13th due to unexpectedly high temperatures. Please bring chairs or a blanket to sit on with your family and friends.

This calendar was determined by a parent survey conducted during the Spring 2011. As an international school, we have many parents that request longer holidays so that families can travel abroad. Our calendar has fewer isolated holidays and more long weekends.
Parents may choose which religious holidays their children observe. Please send a note to your child’s teacher to inform them of upcoming holidays when your child will not be in school or will have special needs while they are in school such as specific times for prayer or fasting.
