Upper High School Students deconstruct light to investigate the structure of matter this week in Physical Science. No photons will be harmed during this activity and a representative of PETA (Photon Emission, Transition and Absorption) will be on-site.

Parent orientation and open house

Welcome new and returning students!

Parent orientation is scheduled for August 12 beginning at 6:00 PM. If you are a new parent, or started school mid-year in 2009-10 then you are required to attend. Orientation will guide you in our daily schedule, disciplinary procedures, show-and-tell, and many other day-to-day happenings. It is a great way to get to know your childs’ teacher as well as the other parents in their room. Please set aside 30-45 minutes to meet with the teachers at The Capitol Preschool.

Parent orientation is for parents only.

Open house is August 13th from 8:00-10:00 AM. Drop by with your child for a few minutes and meet his/her teachers, find your child’s cubby, turn in forms, blue cards, extra clothes, and nap mats. Parents can come anytime during the open house and are not required to stay the full two hours. We look forward to seeing you there!

Capitol School Students In Mayor’s Cup 5K Run

Five Capitol School elementary school students ran in the Mayor’s Cup 5K event in downtown Tuscaloosa on Saturday, April 24, 2010. The runners included Melanie Mew, Tayler Daughtry, Kristin Hobson, and Marko Beasley. Marko won third place in his age division. All runners completed the race through the pouring rain, and they refused to quit!

Multiple ways of “doing” Math

Students at The Capitol School realize that that there are many ways to do math. In our cluster, we use a combination of montessori math, touchmath, accelerated math and other manipulatives to experience mathematics. Here, these students use tens bars and units to learn addition with regrouping.

The International Dinner

VIDEO: 2010 International Dinner

The preschool children sang in four different languages and toured over 20 country tables. They were able to hear, see, and speak different languages with native speakers. Children were also allowed to taste native dishes and enjoyed playing with toys and trying on clothes from many different cultures. The experience deepened their awareness and appreiciation for our global community.

The Tuscaloosa Multiple Sclerosis Walk was a great success! Our team set a fundraising goal of $500 and ended up bringing in a total of $1,076 to date! Children do not have to wait until they are adults to make a difference in our world. They can and do make a difference RIGHT NOW! Thank you all for your donations, fundraising, support and community spirit!

German Day Results

Our German students had another successful day at the University of Alabama’s German Day. We competed against high school German programs from across the state. We won:

9. 2nd Place, dual show and tell, level 1, Riley Peak and River Copeland
10. 2nd Place, t-shirt design, level 2, Pascal Nad

Mathematics Contest Winner!

The speed and comprehension challenge in mathematics came to a conclusion this week. In The Capitol School’s own version of March Madness, students were paired off for sets of ten problems each in addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. Runners-up Rachael Shirley, Mary Hanna McDonald, and finally River Copeland, gave Nick Ultee a tremendous challenge. Nick did a superb job during the contest. His prize was a ten dollar award to the movies. Congratulations to everyone involved.
