Our field trip to the Native American Festival at Moundville is tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 4. Many thanks to all of the parents who have agreed to drive and supervise. So many people have volunteered that we will have 1-2 students per parent. If you haven’t already submitted a copy of your driver’s license and insurance to the office, you can take a photo or scan a copy. Email it to contact@thecapitolschool.com. If your child will ride with another parent, he or she will need a carseat or booster. Check the list below to see if the parent driving has indicated that they already have an extra carseat installed. If so, you will not need to leave one. Please put your name on your carseat. You can leave it in our room or if the parent driving your child is here when you are, you can transfer your seat to that parent’s car at that time. You also might like to give the parent supervising your child your phone number. You could text it to him or her, leave a note with your child’s money, etc. Every child needs to bring a lunch and drinks. Since this is a field trip, we cannot heat foods. I am going to ask each parent driving and supervising to keep the lunches and drinks of the student riding with him or her.
I recommend comfortable clothing and great walking shoes. Please apply sunscreen and insect spray if desired when you drop off your child if you are not going on the trip. Your child would appreciate some money to spend. I recommend about $20. This will pay for a souvenir and a snack like some Dipping Dots. If you put your child’s money in a ziplock bag, it will make it easy for the adult supervising your child to keep up with it. If you are supervising students, I like to carry a bag with me to carry some drinks for my group. It gets hot walking around. You might like to do the same. All of the students are supposed bring drinks with their lunches. I hope that we can leave as close to 8:30 as possible. We need to be back before 3:00. Traffic has been challenging on 69 South, so I think we should plan to leave by 2:00. It probably will not take that long, but better safe than sorry. I will pay for everyone at the gate by check. I need to be the first in so that I can pay for your group. I will give everyone a colorful sign that says “The Capitol School” to help the staff identify who I have paid for. Please let me enter first. I will be driving a white Buick Rendezvous. After parking, please walk to the front of the Museum. I would like for us to have a group photo together. I would then like to take students into the museum in small groups. I would like to show everyone around. My suggestion is that half of us enter the museum while the other half of the class visits the souvenir area. After the first group visits the museum, we can switch. Dr. Thompson will be with us, so she also might be able to help us tour the museum. Please escort your students to the various events and activities around the park. The great thing about each of us having a small group is that allows us to pick activities without a long line, to stay as long as our students are interested, and to take breaks when needed. You might like to go with another one of our groups. Two parents together helps at the bathroom, etc. Ask your child who he or she would like to walk around with. Drivers and Supervisers, please bring a blanket or something for your group to sit on to eat lunch. I also plan to bring some adult chairs. You might wish to do the same. It is nice if we can meet back at the car area around 11:30 for lunch. The students like to have a few minutes together. Please text me at 205-393-5098 to let me know when you have left the park at 2:00. Please put your name in the message of the text. Please make sure that Mrs. Fain or I have made it to the classroom before you leave your students at school. We have some cars with just one student. This is often helpful incase someone gets sick, etc. and needs to leave. I do not have anyone assigned to my car, so I can take students if an emergency arises. I will try to get around the park to have a few moments with each group. If you have just your student and would like to ride with another parent who has room, just give that parent a phone call. Please take photos if possible and send them to me via email. Again, thank you so much for your help on this trip.
