Ideas for Home Activities

WINTER BREAK ACTIVITIES

Need some ideas to keep your little one happy and busy during Winter Break? Kelsea Butler, one of our Montessori Preschool Teachers has some ideas:

For preschool and toddlers the main focus during the break would be to allow the children to help with holiday preparations around the house. Folding rags, unloading the dishwasher, helping cook, dusting, sweeping, sorting the tupperware and matching the lids, caring for pets and plants are all good activities that promote fine and gross motor skills, sorting, matching and a peaceful mindset. Allowing young children to help with chores may slow down the progress and the results might not be perfect but it will let them know that they are needed, that their efforts are valued, and it allows them to spend one on one time with parents doing something productive.

Another thing to encourage at this time of year are random acts of kindness. These acts show us how little acts can have a big impact and puts an emphasis on the importance of giving. Donating old toys and clothes, giving to a food bank, making cards or ornaments for family and neighbors, leaving treats for delivery drivers and mail people, complimenting someone's outfit or hair, and smiling at people who seem worried are all great ways to encourage a caring and kind attitude.

A good option for screen time would be Cosmic Kids Yoga on youtube. It allows them to move and stretch their body while engaging in a story. The instructor has a kind relaxing voice and allows some time for brief meditation and breathing.

A good gross motor activity would be putting tape on the floor in the shape (it could even be a Christmas tree) and having them balance on the line. You could also plan a scavenger hunt.
