Capitol School students take many honors at UA’s German Day
On March 3, 2023, the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa hosted the first in-person German high school compe on since the beginning of the pandemic. The topic was “Sport und Bewegung” (Sports and Movement).
"German Day" is sponsored by the German Program of the Department of Modern Languages and Classics of the College of Arts and Sciences.
About 150 students from high schools and middle schools from the whole state of Alabama had signed up for the event with a variety of oral, wri en and visual art compe ons. They recited German poems, sung German songs from memory, gave presenta ons in German, demonstrated their comprehension and wri ng skills in various ways, and applied their German skills in crea ve visual art projects following the requirements of their applicable skill level and event. The Capitol School had 13 middle school students and 5 high school students who competed. They achieved 14 honors in group and individual events.
Ready for German Day: 15 Students from the Capitol School successfully participated in the statewide high school German competition that was held on the UA campus in Tuscaloosa on March 3, 2023
15 students from the Capitol School competed at German Day in person; three other students could not be present, but contributed individual or group creative expression entries.

Capitol School middle school student Onda McKnight won 3rd placer In the Graphic Storytelling competition, 2nd place for her sticker design, and 1st place in the Group Song Level 1 competition.
Capitol School middle school student Sylvia Roberts won 2nd place in the Original Art competition and 1st place in the Group Song competition Level 1.
Capitol School middle school student Audra Kutzer competed in the Heritage Speaker/Near Native Level and won 1st place Graphic Storytelling, 3rd place Individual Poetry, and 1st place Sticker Design.
Capitol School middle school student Isaac Sprunger won second place in the Graphic Storytelling competition Level 1.
